Tourism in the States is a massive industry and millions of backpackers and tourists visit every year. Day 1: San Francisco
A visit to San Francisco would not be complete without seeing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The 1.7 mile-long suspension bridge links San Francisco with Marin County and can be crossed by car, bicycle or on foot. There are parking and viewing areas at either end of the bridge. Another must-see attraction in San Francisco is an island tour of Alcatraz. Learn about the island's colorful history the famous island prison. Boat cruises to Alcatraz operate from $26 for an adult.
Day 2: Yosemite National Park Area
From San Francisco, head east towards Yosemite National Park. Located in Central California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, Yosemite National Park stretches an incredible 1,170 square miles of breathtaking natural scenery. The park was one of the first wilderness parks in the United States and is best known for its waterfalls, deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoia forests and vast wilderness areas. For a magical experience, find a good spot in the park to witness the warm changing colours of the landscape during sunset.
Day 3: Las Vegas
Time to stop off at the 24/7 party town and mix with the A-listers who swarm here. Cruise the ‘The Strip’ in a superstretch limousine or ease the pain in one of the famous all-you-can-eat buffets. If you have time catch one of the many Las Vegas shows – with all the bright lights and glitter you will not be disappointed!
Day 4: Grand Canyon National Park
Get over the sensory overload of Las Vegas by hiking deep into the Grand Canyon on the Bright Angel Trail, or explore along the Colorado River bed - the hiking paths along its vast rim are unforgettable, particularly at sunset. A powerful and inspiring landscape, the Grand Canyon will overwhelm your senses through its immense size. Experience the great outdoors by camping out in the wilderness overnight.
Day 5: Grand Canyon National Park
Take to the skies and witness the Grand Canyon's monumental red-and-gold formations from up high. When it comes to photographing the Grand Canyon, the lighting is more dramatic during the early morning and the late afternoon where the long shadows bring out depth and texture. A photo opportunity not to be missed!
Day 6: Lake Havasu
After a beautiful sunrise and well-spent morning at the Grand Canyon, head west and follow the sun to idyllic Lake Havasu. This large reservoir behind the Parker Dam on the Colorado River borders the states of California and Arizona, and is home to the original London Bridge. Here you can spend your day with fun filled outdoor adventures including kayaking, water skiing, fishing and boating.
Day 7: Los Angeles
Follow the sun back to the Pacific Ocean. Tour Hollywood and the Walk of Fame or instead hit the beach for a sunset finale. To join in with the American team spirit, go and see an LA Lakers basketball game. The City of Angels is the entertainment capital of the world, and greets you in the only way it knows how - sprawling, celebrity-driven and simply electric. A perfect way to end your backpacking adventure!
