New Yorkers don't have to travel far to find the best beach in the nation. Or some of the best beaches in the world, for that matter. So says Dr. Beach, the renowned sage of sand, sea and sunshine who's been compiling an annual list of the best beaches in the U.S. for the past 20 years based on a stringent set of criteria. And according to the good doctor, this year's winner is Cooper's Beach in Southampton, a pristine stretch of white sand and pounding surf located on the south shore of Long Island's East End. It's an area that Dr. Beach - he's actually Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research - says is already loaded with beautiful beaches that many New Yorkers either take for granted or don't realize are less than a two-hour drive from the city. "There are world-class beaches here that are actually better-known to Europeans than to Americans," says Leatherman. "Wherever they live, most people tend to go south for a beach vacation, and they end up never going to their own beaches," he adds. |
