The new box, which Virgin customers can pre-register for today online, goes on sale during mid-December. It has been created in a bid to put apps, catch-up services and media streaming in one place: on the TV screen. Cindy Rose, Virgin Media’s executive director of digital entertainment, told The Telegraph: “We are hoping that this new set top box will help Virgin Media make the transition from a pay-TV platform to a content discovery platform, which is a significant shift.” Internet-connected TVs and set-top boxes have long been hailed as the ultimate consumer gadget – the fusion of the worldwide web with the largest screen in the home is often called the holy grail for both the consumer and media owner, because the content and advertising options are endless. |
