Unlocking Software for iPhone 3.0 Released

The Release of the new iPhone 3.0 models this week resulted in o2 and Carphone Warehouse stores all over the UK running out of stock. There is said to be a correlation between the huge consumer interest and sales of iPhone unlocking software.

The Dev-Team, an iPhone hacking group, has released a free jailbreaking and unlocking tool for the iPhone 3.0 OS.

iPhone OS 3.0 comes with plenty of new features for all iPhone and iPod touch owners, however, so some users may be swayed to just stick with the official version of the OS this time around. Unlocking and jailbreaking 1st generation iPhone (iPhone 2 G) running iPhone 3.0 software is very easy though.

Called UltraSn0w, the easy to use unlocking tool jailbreaks the 3.0 iPhone to allow unauthorized apps and unlocks it for use with other carriers.

Note, the unlock doesn’t work on the new iPhone 3GS, though it does work on 2G and 3G iPhones and both generations of the iPod touch.

Available for Windows and Mac OS X (though not PowerPC machines), the instructions are:

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3. Run Cydia or Icy
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or icy
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
8. Enjoy

The Dev Team promises a fix for the iPhone 3GS, but hasn’t promised any delivery time.

Here’s a video tutorial for using UltraSn0w from iClarified. And here’s the text instructions with a bunch of nice screenshots.
