We asked you what you made of this week’s Mac mini update, and you spoke. The comments were a decent mix of for and against. Some people agreed with my post, in which I said that the new mini was not as good value as it used to be. JD said: “I love OSX and how it runs but I don’t follow it blindly paying retarded prices for their products.” Tokoha suggested that people wait to get a better deal: “Better to wait until Labor Day, get a machine with 10.6 installed and back-to-school deals in place.” But some of you thought the price was fair, or at least fair enough. Nash said that buying a computer is like buying a car, and that saving up to get the best is worthwhile: “If I really want the right one, okay, I might have to save for a few more months. But when I get it, I just have that smile on my face, knowing that I got the very right product, for the very right reasons.” And Jeremy said: “I’m pretty happy, and may replace my aging desktop G5 with one, and finally have a desktop that can keep up with my MacBook Pro.” My take: I still think this machine has lost value. At this price, it’s no longer a tempting purchase as a hacker’s toy, or for a Windows user who wants to try out OS X just to see what all the fuss is about. And that’s a pity. Also, I agree with Adam Frucci at Gizmodo: those upgrade prices for RAM are just *incredible*. And not the good kind of incredible. (Photo used under CC License: thanks pacomexico.) |
