What is HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE?Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a diuretic drug used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). It helps in fluid retention of the body by inhibiting the body from absorbing too much salt. By preventing the fluid retention in the body it helps in treatment of congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disorders or edema caused due to intake of steroids or estrogen. It is also used for the treatment of swelling (edema) of the body caused by corticosteroid medications and nephritic syndrome. Because it effectively decreases the amount of calcium excreted by the kidneys in the urine it can also be used to treat calcium-containing kidney stones. Care should be taken that HCTZ is not ingested in cases of allergy towards this drug or if you are unable to urinate. You need to inform your doctor of any pre-existence of diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, asthma or allergies, gout, diabetes or any allergies related to sulfa drugs. This drug has been reported to show some unwanted side effects just like any other medication. To make sure this drug is not causing you any harmful effects you need to keep a regular check on your blood pressure and have your blood and urine tested in the case of vomiting and dehydration. |
