Stomach flu is also called Gastroenteritis. Swelling of the stomach and small intestine is called Gastroenteritis. This infection is caused by a variety of viruses that result in vomiting or diarrhea or both. Influenza virus is not related to this infection. It is the second most common illness in the United States.

Causes of Stomach flu

Stomach flu is caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses. Viral gastroenteritis caused by viruses only including astrovirus, rotaviruses, adenoviruses, sapoviruses, type 40 or 41 and noroviruses as it is not caused by bacteria and parasite. The stomach flu occurs when the germs enter the stomach. Germs that cause the stomach flu usually enter the stomach by mouth.

Symptoms of Stomach flu

Stomach flu usually take several days for symptoms to appear. Symptoms can last anywhere from one to ten days, depending on which virus a person is infected with.

Common symptoms are:

  • Watery diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramping ("stomach ache")

Additional symptoms of stomach flu can contain:

  • General Sense of tiredness.
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Chills

Treatment of Stomach flu:

For the treatment of the infection, you have to consult a doctor and get the prescription of the medicines. Generally stomach flu almost recover completely with no long term problem. But it can be serious for person who is unable to drink enough fluid due to vomiting and diarrhea. Dehydration occurs due to vomiting and diarrhea. This is a viral infection so that we have to stop the spreading of viruses. We can prevent this infection by washing hands before eating or after using bathroom, keep food in cover, water is also be covered and by taking medicines on time.
