Smallpox Symptoms, Cause and Treatment

Smallpox is a contagious ailment that occurs due to Variola major or Variola minor virus. It is also recognized as Variola or Variola vera. Smallpox is located in small blood vessels of the skin, mouth and throat. It localizes in the skin having trait of maculopapular rash and then it raised fluid-filled blisters. Smallpox has many symptoms and causes and be aware about them to prevent this condition.   

To differentiate variola from the "great pox," the word smallpox was first used in the 15th century in Europe. People have different view about the origins of the smallpox. Some people think that it is derived from the Asian subcontinent and some people think that it is derived from the ancient Egypt. Before the 20th century ended, 300–500 million people died due to smallpox. Before 1967, 15 million people come in the contact of the smallpox and two million expired in that year, according to World Health Organization.

Virus of the smallpox spreads through the infected person’s coughs, talks, or sneezes. The person gets the infection of the smallpox, when he/she comes in the face-to-face contact of the infected person. Smallpox vaccine is given to the sufferer because it is a kind of shot that avert infection with the virus that leads smallpox situation.

Symptoms of smallpox:

When the person is affected, the virus begins to repeat itself within 72-96 hours. Symptoms of smallpox can be observed within 7-17 days. Body pain, fever, chills and headache are the first signs of the smallpox. It is difficult to decide whether the person suffers from the smallpox or not, when the rashes do not appear on the skin. In this station, high fever is only the sign that will begin after the end of incubation period.

High fever and rash are the two major indication of smallpox, when the person is affected by Variola major virus. Variola major also leads the serious illnesses and in some cases this virus kills the person. The existence of Variola minor virus can be found in blood, lymph nodes and bone marrow after twelve days of infection.

When your body turns in the normal temperature, little ruddy patches start to emerge on tongue, throat, palate and mouth. After few days, these spots start to develop speedily. An adult can be affected by encephalitis. Other symptoms of this situation include optic atrophy, iridocyclitis, corneal ulcer, keratitis, conjunctivitis, etc.

Causes of smallpox:

Variola minor and variola major virus are the main cause behind this situation. Other virus like Vaccinia, cowpox, monkeypox also leads the smallpox. Human beings are infected only by the Variola virus. Animals as well as humans may be affected by the rest of the other viruses.  

Smallpox takes place due to Variola virus that belongs to Orthopoxvirus genus and Poxviridae family. Any age groups of the people are affected by the virus of the smallpox. Infants and children are more susceptible to this ailment.

When the virus enters in the skin, red lesions can be viewed and slowly they turn in vesicles then pustules. When the virus remains in the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, it discharges big quantity of virus into the saliva. When the rashes start to develop is considered as the high time because in this time the chance of being infected by the virus is very high.

Treatments of the smallpox:

No drugs are found to treat the smallpox. Appropriate care can assist a patient to recover from this illness speedily. Take vaccine of smallpox to prevent the growth of this disease and decrease the symptoms of this situation. The patient should stay in the fresh air.  

Cidofovir is antiviral medication, which gives the better result in this situation. But it has also some side effects thus it is not given to the patient. Fluid therapy and infection control is also considered as ordinary treatments that gives the superior result.

You have to clean the affected area of the skin with absolute care therefore the virus cannot spread in the other part of the body. When the symptoms of the smallpox found, the individual should not come in connect with other people.
