As the heart pumps blood through the arteries (large blood vessels), it pushes the blood against the arterial walls with a force that is measured as "blood pressure." Blood pressure can be unhealthy, both if there is high blood pressure or lower blood pressure in the body.

Normal blood pressure is 120 to 129 over 80 to 84, and optimal blood pressure is less than 120 over 80.

2. Vitamin E: This commonly known vitamin has been known to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke by reducing LDL cholesterol levels. In addition, it also scavenges the body for free radicals. Having a low level of this vitamin in the body is a primary indicator of heart disease.

3. Essential Fatty Acids: Essential fatty acids found in fish oils and flaxseed oils can contribute to decreased blood pressure and blood lipids. Most Eskimo cultures have low cardiovascular disease, mainly attributed to the fact that their diets consist of coldwater fish.

4. Nicotinc Acid: This compound, found in niacin, has the ability to substantially lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Hypertensive people can remarkably reduce their blood pressure through nutritional changes. Increasing the amount of vegetables and fruit and reducing the amount of fat and cholesterol will not only reduce blood pressure but can help with weight loss, which also lowers blood pressure.

  • Avoid salt, sugar, dairy products, refined foods, fried foods, junk foods, and caffeine.
  • Eliminate food sensitivities. Use elimination and challenge diet to determine food sensitivities.
  • Drink 50% of your body weight in ounces of water daily (e.g., if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75 oz of water daily).
  • Eat whole, fresh, unrefined, and unprocessed foods. Include fruits, vegetables, garlic, onion, whole grains, soy, beans, seeds, nuts, olive oil, and cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, halibut, and mackerel).
  • Low sodium-high potassium diet. Most people are aware that reducing sodium (salt) intake can help reduce blood pressure. However, that may not be the whole picture. Restricting sodium intake to lower blood pressure appears to work better if accompanied by increasing potassium intake. Keep in mind that reducing sodium intake involves more than not using a salt shaker, but also reading processed and prepared food labels for the sodium content.

A few secondary nutrients that also help lower high blood pressure are Vitamin D, Zinc, Lecithin (available in capsule or granule form), Chromium, and ginger.

There are also several herbs that have been shown to be highly beneficial in fighting high blood pressure. However, it is extremely important that you consult with a medical professional before implementing these supplements as they can create adverse reactions when taken simultaneously with medications.

Garlic, valerian root, black cohosh root, cayenne, kelp, blessed thistle and parsley leaves are the herbal combination that can help to lower blood pressure. The suggested dosage is four to eight capsules a day. Once an adequate reduction of blood pressure is achieved, slowly decrease the dosage while maintaining the effect.
