Yellow teeth are unsightly and there are several products on the market which are purported to whiten the teeth so that one may have a bright, nice-looking smile. Too much tea, coffee, and smoking all contribute to this condition. There are some alternatives, however, to the off-the-shelf products which can be harsh and damage the enamel of the teeth.
One old remedy is to take a washcloth (preferably a white one) and dip it in some olive oil, and then scrub the teeth with that. Baking soda has been used for decades and still works well. A small mixture of baking soda, salt, and a few drops of vinegar is a good way to whiten the teeth. Brush with toothpaste afterwards.
Hydrogen peroxide is safe to use as long as it is not used more than a few times a week, and swallowing it is not recommended. Mix a few teaspoons of the peroxide with a couple teaspoons of baking soda into a paste and brush with that, and then rinse the mouth really well. Another remedy for yellow teeth is to brush with plain salt, then brush with normal toothpaste that has a little bit of salt sprinkled on it. The salt will help remove tartar and plaque, and it will also kill some bacteria as well. Good results have also been obtained from a combination of salt and mustard oil, and the mustard oil will leave a slight burning sensation on the gums.
Apple cider vinegar works well as a whitener for yellow teeth, but it must be diluted or else it will start to wear out the tooth enamel since it is acidic. A good dilution of apple cider vinegar and water makes a good mouthwash. A somewhat slower but seemingly effective method is to rinse the mouth out with coconut oil for five minutes a day. The coconut oil method usually takes about two weeks to produce desired results.
Other whitening remedies for yellow teeth include a paste made from fish oil, butter, and salt. Dry bay leaves that are ground and then mixed with some dried orange peels is another unusual mixture that is used by some. Rubbing bark from a willow tree onto the teeth is another somewhat unusual method used to whiten teeth. A gargle made from a little bit of rock salt and water is another method. Even chewing a piece of sugarless gum will help whiten the teeth. Adding a small amount of clove oil (one drop) to the toothpaste will also help.
There are several home remedies used to forfeit those ugly yellow teeth. Baking soda, salt, and hydrogen peroxide are time-honored favorites when used properly.
