There are just about as many products to help someone quit smoking as there are people who smoke, it seems. With so many methods and so many products, it quickly adds up to an expensive endeavor to try to kick the habit, almost as expensive as the habit itself. Home remedies used to quit smoking and to help alleviate the associated health problems do exist, and some of them will be discussed here.
Drinking grape juice and orange juice a couple of times a day is said to help alleviate the nicotine cravings. Honey used as a food topping (such as on toast) or mixed with a grated radish is also another home remedy for quitting smoking. Two tablespoons of baking soda in a glass of water at every mealtime is also an aid in the effort to kick the habit.
Oatmeal not only helps lower cholesterol, it helps reduce nicotine cravings (even if one is not trying to quit smoking). It makes no difference, really, if it is instant oatmeal or not, the oats themselves are the important factor.
It is also important to take a daily vitamin or at least some vitamin supplements (especially for vitamins C, E, and A) to help alleviate some of the damage done by smoking. Ginger is especially good for reducing nausea associated with nicotine withdrawal. Wild oat has been known to be effective in reducing nicotine cravings and soothing the rattled nerves that come from trying to quit smoking. Ten drops in a glass of juice or water should be taken three times a day for the wild oat method.
Lobelia is another herb that is also used as a remedy to quit smoking. It is stronger than the wild oat, but can be toxic in a high dose. The home remedy using lobelia is the same as is used for wild oat (ten drops in juice or water) and is also to be taken no more than three times a day. However, it is not recommended to take lobelia if one has coronary disease or hypertension, or if one is pregnant or still breastfeeding. Lobelia is also used as a nicotine substitute in over-the-counter stop smoking products.
St. John’s Wort is often used to ameliorate the depression or anxiety associated with the attempt to quit smoking. It has also been reported that mixing a half-teaspoon of cream of tartar into a glass of orange juice will help rid the body of nicotine if taken just before bedtime.
It is always a great idea to seek the counsel of a physician or natural medicine practitioner before trying any home remedies to help one quit smoking. They can provide wise advice for one who has made the decision to stop smoking.
