Healing Swollen Hands Fingers – Home Remedies

So you have a swollen finger, think about what you did in the past week. Did something hit it/fall on it hard enough to make it swell? What else?

Swollen fingers might be the cause of the following:

  • Arthritis – Rheumatoid arthritis causes swollen fingers, it occurs mainly in the 25 to 40 years age group. Most people think that this disease is due to intake of too much protein but this only a theory. Medical science says that the cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. Since there is no cure for arthritis, take pain relievers and antibiotics to help top the swelling.
  • Flexor Sheath Infection – Usually follow after penetrating trauma (this is when an object pierces through your skin). Infection of the tendon sheath may result in severe disability and stiffness of the fingers. This infection destroys the gliding mechanism, rapidly creating adhesions. Parenteral antibiotics, rest, elevation, and tight observation may cause this infection to be reversed. Surgical debridement and drainage must be done if the patient does not improve in 24 hours. Complications such as extension of infection to the thumb, ruptures, fever, and chilling might imply if not treated immediately.
  • Wound Infections – Swelling may be caused by bacteria that has entered from wound opening and caused irritation and infection. Antibiotics may be taken or applied to wound to help sterilize and kill the harmful bacteria.
  • Bone Fracture – This may be caused by accidentally slipping or when too much pressure is applied to the finger. Nerve blockage and blood clotting on the fingers might occur when the finger is fractured. If so, apply ice to the infected area and avoid moving it (doing so might cause pain). Go and seek medical help.
  • Insect bites / stings – Allergic reaction from certain insects (bees, mosquitoes, ticks, etc.) can also make your fingers swollen. If a bee has stung you and the venom sack is still intact, remove them by using tweezers be careful in doing so for disturbing the venom sack would cause its muscles to contract thus making the sting go in deeper. Other insect bites can be treated with a mild soap and ointments.
  • Rings – When wedding rings, engagement rings, graduation rings and any other type of ring won’t allow your finger to “breathe,” this may also cause your finger/s to swell up. If the situation occurs, then constantly apply ice to the swollen area. Be careful on pulling out the ring for it may cause your finger to swell up 2 times the size of the ring. When you observe that the ring can now be removed, apply oil or any kind of lube to help the ring glide out easier.
