What is Guinea Worm Disease ?
Guinea worm is a parasitic disease caused by infection with the Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis).
How Does Guinea Worm Disease Infects ?
The disease is now by drinking water contaminated with infected intermediate hosts of the parasite, called Cyclops. Guinea-worm disease is also known as Dracunculiasis and end-of-the-road disease because it is not seen in the big cities.
Guinea Worm Disease Facts
Once it infects a person, the Guinea worm migrates through her body. It is finally out of the body (by the feet in 90% of cases), causing intense pain.
The countries known to harbor the Guinea worm are Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Togo and Uganda. The disease is usually not fatal, but it is excruciatingly painful, especially as the worm prepares from the body.
Guinea Worm Disease Cure
There are no medications to treat the disease. Removing the worm, as it emerges from the infected person, the skin is healing or surgical removal of a trained doctor.
The Guinea worm eradication project under the auspices of the Carter Center's Global 2000 International Health Program, recently a part of the 28.5 million U.S. dollars grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
