Gingivitis Causes and Treatment

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the main reason why many people, generally adult people lose their teeth. It is also the first sign of periodontal disease. The signs that you have gingivitis are: your gums are colored bluish red and when brushing your teeth, your gums bleed easily.

Causes of Gingivitis:

  • Plaque. It is the direct cause of gingivitis. Plaque is bacterial substance that is build up on parts of the teeth and this is not easy to remove. If it stays inside your mouth, what happens is it will become toxic products which irritate the surrounding tissues like the gums. Over the time, it will become tartar. Tartar is a hard white crust that develops in your teeth. These two factors will be the main cause of losing your teeth.
  • Dental hygiene. If you have inadequate dental hygiene, like for example, you do not brush your teeth regularly or you miss visiting your dentist to clean your teeth, you can have gingivitis.

Other Causes of Gingivitis include:

  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Medications’
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Contraceptives
  • Thyroid disease

Treating Gingivitis, the Natural Way:

Practice good oral hygiene. You have to brush your teeth three times a day or every after meal. You can also floss regularly but you have to make sure that you do it right. When brushing your teeth, position your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth. This way, you will be able to clean your teeth and gums as well.

Vitamin C can help to control the bleeding but it can’t actually treat gingivitis. Antiseptic mouthwash like Listerine can inhibit the formation of plaque in your teeth thus it prevents gingivitis to develop. Gargle Listerine 2-3 times a day.

You can also apply baking soda and water solution in your gums. You have to mix baking soda with water and then apply it along the gum line by simply using your finger. If you have an aloe gel at home, you can use that to reduce plaque.

Eat nutritious foods especially vegetables and fruits that are high in fiber. Healthy foods help in treating gingivitis and cleaning your teeth and gums.

Other ways to Treat Gingivitis are:

  • Give up smoking and drinking alcohol
  • See your dentist regularly
  • Use toothpaste brand that has natural ingredients
