A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that exposure of cell phone for 50 minutes close to the head is sufficient to increase brain activity. Brain activities increase in the part of the brain near to the antenna of the cell phone. The health effects of increased brain activity are unknown. This study is the 1st big study that indicates the cellphone’s weak radio-frequency signals can change brain activity. The lead author of the study is Nora Volkow. The study was done to show how the brain responds to electromagnetic fields led by wireless phone signals but Nora Volkow was amazed to see that the human brain is sensitive to weak electromagnetic radiation. 47 people are involved in the study and each participant underwent two 50-minute scans with a cell phone fitted on each ear. In the first 50-minute scan the cellphones were turned off while in the second scan the right ear cell phone was turned on to receive a call from a recorded message. Positron emission tomography (PET) scans were used in the study to map out the brain. 2 injections with a dye which measures brain glucose metabolism are undergone in the study subject that is an indication of the brain's activity. The study found that brain activities increase by about 7% in the part of the brain near to the antenna of the cell phone when the phone was on and receiving a call. Rather than placing a cellphone, Dr. Nora Volkow now uses ear phone close to her ear. As per Dr. Volkow, “her findings suggest the need for more study to see if cell phones have a negative effect on brain cells”.
