Back pain or Kidney InfectionIt is obvious that you may start worrying when you have back pain. But are you worried that the cause of the backpain could be a kidney infection? You can clearly tell the difference using signs or symptoms in your body. Let's first see how kidney infection can cause the back pain.

You can feel the pain in flank area, on your back, in the sides of the spine and above the hips. Pain caused by kidney is generally severe and it occurs in waves.

Common Symptoms and Causes of Kidney Pain

Kidney Infection

Kidney Stones :

When a stone gets lodged in the ureter, urine flow gets blocked. and urine starts flowing back up in the kidney, which causes the kidney to enlarge and causes the pain.

Kidney infection (pyelonephritis):

Pain caused by kidney infection is result of infection and inflammation in the kidney tissue. Due to this infection, kidney swells and stretches the pain sensitive capsule surrounding the kidney. This leads to a sharp aching pain.

How to distinguish between pain caused by kidney infection and lower back pain :

Here are listed the signs, symptoms and differences that you can use to differentiate between kidney infection pain and back pain.

Pain Caused by Kidney Infection (symptoms)

Lower Back Pain (symptoms)

  • Pain caused by Kidney infection goes away with the healing of a kidney infection, or passing of a kidney stone
  • Pain caused by kidney infection typically is in the area of the back where the kidneys lie.
  • When you have kidney infection, you can have pain during urination, blood in the urine or fever with accompanying chills.
  •  If you feel tenderness in the area above your hips where the kidneys are located, then your kidney backpain is injury-related.
  • In case of kidney infection, the pain may increase as the bladder gets full or it may travel to the genital area.
  • Back pain from trauma to the back, however, usually does not go away this quickly.
  • The most common type of back pain is acute back pain, a short-term condition that lasts anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
  • When you have a stretched, torn or twisted muscle, the pain will be specific to the area.
  • Some other symptoms can be Continuous aching, pain or stiffness around spine, neck or hips.
  • To treat the lower back pain, doctors suggest rest, exercise, hot/cold compress, analgesics and other pain medications.

Doctors suggest to the patients having back pain and having history of kidney infection, that they should be tested for a possible kidney problem as they are prone to these infections.

Kidney Pain

In mid July I went to the doctor cause I felt like crap and my back ached. Tests showed I had a Kidney Infection, I was given antibiotics and sent home. I finished my antibiotics and went back in for a check up. But my Kidneys were still hurting bad and two months later they still do. Ive gone back several times to Indian Health Service and they tell me its only back pain and send me home with IB profen and muscle relaxers. I have a history of back pain but have not had it for 3 yrs. I havent been able to sleep latley because of the pain and I know its my Kidneys. IDK what to do and the quality of care at IHS is so poor but its all I have.
