Amoebic dysentery (or amebic dysnrety) commonly known as amoebiasis is caused by the amoeba Entamoeba histolytica. This aneaerobic parasitic protozoan (infects humans and other primates) causes an infection in the bowel (colon) characterized by diarrhea and may be fatal to infants or other older people with low resistance. The main risk of this infection is dehydration. Amoebiasis may be transmitted through water and food contamination and it is more common in places with very poor sanitation. Entamoeaba histolytica exists in two forms: (a) as a free amoeba known as trophozoites and; (b) as infected cyts. This cyts are surrounded by thick protective wall that has been excreted in the carrier’s feces (animal or human). Symptoms of Ameobiasis: • Stomach cramps (pain in the abdomen) and having the urge to frequently go to the bathroom. Ameobiasis is usually treated with antibiotics, Metronidazole is commonly used. Anitibiotics which include paromomycin and tomodazole may also be used. You may be given antibiotics that are taken intravenously (IV treatment) if amoebiasis is causing you to vomit. After taking the antibiotics, you may be given an amoebicide (diloxanide furoate) to kill any remaining amoebas in your intestines. Infection causing symptoms may also be prevented in the future. Home Remedies: • Kernal may be removed from dried seeds of beal fruit and mango seed. Take equal quantities, a tsp of each grounded together may suffice. ¼ of this mixture should be set aside then taken later with a cup of rice gruel. Do this once a day for 3 to 4 days. This helps cure the amoebiasis. Being contaminated with amoebiasis may be prevented with good hygiene. You should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot running water before preparing food and eating, after smoking and going to the toilet. Eat only fruits and vegetables that can be cooked, those which cannot be peeled should be avoided. If they can’t be avoided, it is best to sanitize them with boiled water (doing so kills the Entamoeaba histolytica cysts). You should also prevent flies from coming into contact with your food. |
