I have been fairly critical of UFC president Dana White over the last year. My criticism was at an all-time high when negotiations between the UFC and Fedor Emelianenko broke down last year.

Saturday’s UFC 109 card is suffered from the afterbirth of The Fall Curse of 09, with the initial match up of Lil Nog vs. Brandon Vera being scrapped due to Nog’s ankle injury and Josh Koscheck withdrawing from his rematch with Paulo Thiago due to his own injury, so teammate Mike Swick has stepped in for Koscheck. Interestingly enough, the UFC main event featuring Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman (being jokingly referred to as “The Battle of the Old Geezers”) has made it this far without injuries. Their combined age is 91. Okay I promise no more jokes about their age since it’s been beaten like a dead horse around the blogosphere. With that said, let’s get down to it:

The Brock Lesnar mystery is closer to being solved today. Lesnar and UFC president Dana White appeared this afternoon on ESPN SportsCenter. Lesnar claimed that he is cured of diverticulitis and will fight again.

The UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva will make his long awaited return at UFC 112. Silva is scheduled to defend the title against former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort. Vitor Belfort’s management confirmed the fight this past week. The fight will be a co-headliner with a lightweight title defense by B.J. Penn and the return of a former champion on the undercard. Needless to say, UFC 112 show is shaping up to be one of the most stacked shows in UFC history.

While most wrestling fans have been buzzing about the Monday Night Wars for weeks, there was actually a second war that took place this week. The UFC presented a UFC Fight Night on Monday which went head-to-head with WWE RAW. There has been a lot of talk over the last several years in regards to MMA and the UFC stealing pro wrestling fans. If Monday night’s ratings are any indication, the only ones that should be charged with theft should be the World Wrestling Entertainment.

Gray Maynard vs. Nate Diaz - The main event, Gray Maynard vs. Nate Diaz is not only a grudge match, but may hold lightweight title shot implications should Maynard pull out the victory.

For a fight card littered with injuries and changes, UFC 108 compensated with NINE out of ten fights being shown on the PPV broadcast

UFC closes out 2009 this weekend with its first title match since UFC 101. The last time UFC headlined with a title defense, it featured BJ Penn.
