Masters of the surfing world gathered over the weekend to test their skills in the English Championships in Cornwall. Thousands of spectators headed to Watergate Bay near Newquay for one of the country's longest-running surfing competitions.

The Extreme Academy played host to the 38th edition of the Protest English National Surfing Championships. Organised by the English Surfing Federation (ESF), the weekend-long event saw surfers compete to decide the national champions.

Dave Reed, contest director, said: "As the first event of the UK contest season, the English Nationals is always fascinating to watch." Jayse Robinson, 20, from St Ives took gold in the Open Division. He said: "The standards of surfing was, as ever, really high. I feel great because although I've won British Junior under-18s, this is the first time I've won an English title." Second was Lyndon Wake, from Croyde, north Devon, third Tom Earl from Newquay and fourth Stuart Campbell from Woolacombe, north Devon.
