Urban Outfitters Pulls I Support Same Sex Marriage Tee Shirt

Shame on Urban Oufitters! The oh so hip, youth-culture megamart which hawks edgy printed tees and trendy clothes.  groovy furnishing and just about anything with the style lifespan of a gadfly has removed tee shirt screened with the long-lasting sentiment "I Support Same Sex Marriage."

The shirt's designer Tara Littman asked the pertinent question:

With quite a few pro-Obama shirts in their store and even some anti-McCain products, this clearly isn't a company that has a problem being politically aligned, so why?

When questioned, a buyer for Urban Outfitters stated that they had received "too much bad press." Well, okay there was one blog post complaining about the tee. Anyone read  the blog Stand for Marriage ? Anyone even heard of it until now? That one web page by a cranky helicopter mom could not have caused such an uproar... and if it did, I wonder what a bunch of call and emails from pro-LGBT groups would provoke. And what would happen if rainbow dough and lavender-friendly cash was spent elsewhere?

UO's owner Rich Hayne--the man also behind Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain and Leifsdottir--is a very conservative Big Money Republican. Hayne's made $ome big donations to senators who've voted for legislation against gay marriage, like former Pennsylvania senator Rick "Man on Dog" Santorum, whose bigoted comments on civil marriage rights led columnist Dan Savage to create a lulzy neologism based on the legislator's name.

So guess what, cool kids, your hipster clothing budget is going straight to fund the very people who want to strip you of your civil liberties. Vote with your dollars and shop elsewhere, not just for marriage rights and gay rights, but for all your rights.
