In pouring rain on Merseyside, Northampton played heroically in their efforts to hold onto the lead Michael Jacobs gave them in the first half of extra time, with Liverpool needing a late header from David Ngog to take the match to penalties. But even under the pressure of the shoot out, the Cobblers proved the stronger team, with Abdul Osman the hero as he put away the winning spot kick, following misses from Ngog and Eccleston. Northampton striker Billy McKay had set up the chance for the upset after his second-half equaliser took the third-round tie into extra-time. |
