Landon Donovan gave four years of professional and personal frustration one swift kick of a lifetime Wednesday. On the verge of saying goodbye to the World Cup with Team USA's third consecutive tie, Donovan saved the never-say-die Americans with the most dramatic and arguably most important goal in U.S. soccer history. Donovan connected a minute into stoppage time en route to a 1-0 Group C win over Algeria, a result that not only propelled the U.S. into the second round, but made the Americans group winners for the first time since the 1930 competition, before a crowd of 35,827, which included President Clinton at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. |
