Samba soccer returned to the World Cup Monday and Chile wound up getting played off the stage. Five-time champion Brazil rediscovered its magic touch, cruising to a 3-0 second-round victory over its rivals to reach the quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive time. The Chileans became the first South American team to be eliminated. Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay already have reached the final eight, while Paraguay meets Japan Tuesday. Brazil advanced to a Friday showdown with the Netherlands, which won for the fourth time in as many games by dismissing Slovakia, 2-1. |
