There’s plenty to like in the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s rebranding itself as Golf Canada. There’s also cause for concern. I like the plan to introduce more Canadian kids to golf. It’s a crucial part of Golf Canada’s program. I’m concerned about the drive to develop tour players or even elite amateurs, which is required because Golf Canada accepts funding from Sport Canada. Sport Canada in 2005 made Golf Canada then the RCGA the national sports organization (NSO) for the game. Sport Canada wants results. Golf Canada’s most appealing aspect is its National Golf in Schools program (nationalgolfinschools.com). Golf Canada has developed the program in conjunction with the Physical Health & Education Association of Canada (PHE Canada), the Canadian PGA, and ClubLink Corp. The program consists of a series of learning modules that teachers with or without golf experience can use, and costs $475 a school. I spoke with Golf Canada’s executive director Scott Simmons on Wednesday, prior to its rollout yesterday. |
