New York Mets need to send Jenrry Mejia to Triple-A and mold him into a starting pitcher

Three straight days of superb starting pitching had created a new sense of hope among the Mets, hope that overcoming their slow start is as inevitable as Jose Reyes eventually raising his batting average above .154, where it sits now.

In fact, a road trip that began in disastrous fashion, with messy losses in Colorado that made Jerry Manuel's job status a media issue again, had taken on a different feel as the Mets showed some grit to go with their strong pitching.

But they still have a John Maine problem. And even if his fastball had a little more pop Sunday night, he needed a great throw to the plate by Jeff Francoeur and some hard-hit outs to get through five innings against the Cardinals at 3-3.
