Kazakhstan's Alexandre Vinokourov has won the Liège-Bastogne-Liège Classic for the second time in his career. Vinokourov (Astana) and Russia's Alexandr Kolobnev (Katusha) broke clear with less than 20 kilometres remaining in the 258km race from Liège to Ans in the final event of the spring classics season. And Vinokourov, who returned from a blood doping suspension last autumn, won the dash to the line to take his second win in the race and his most significant victory since his ban. Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne), another rider who has been mired in doping allegations, was third, 1min 4sec further back, with Amstel Gold Race winner Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma Lotto) and world road race champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) fourth and fifth, respectively. |
