Sree krishna Janmashtami festival pooja & recipes

Krishna Janmashtami (Devanagari कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी) is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. Shri krishna Janmashtami is also known as "Krishnashtami","Saatam Aatham" ,"Gokulashtami", "Ashtami Rohini", "Srikrishna Jayanti", "Shree Jayanthi" or sometimes only as "Janmashtami". Krishna Janmashtami is a significant festival in the Hindu calendar.

Shri Krishna was born in the 'Rohini' nakshatram (star) in a prison in Mathura to Vaasudev and Mata Devaki on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Sravana. But Mata Yashoda and Nand Baba is raised Lord Krishna.

The festival Gokulashtami is celebrated with lot of magnificence. The image of the infant Bala Krishna is bathed and is cradled in the midnight time. The devotees are celebrate the birth of the God of the world by singing devotional songs and by dancing with great joy and the conch shell are blown.

On this auspicious occasion, temples and homes are wonderfully decorated and light up. Also on the midnight of the Janmashtami, peoples are breaking a Dahi-handi (breaking a pot full of milk and its derivatives).

The Preparation for the Pooja of the Sri Krishna

Most of the peoples are in the world doing the Pooja of the Lord Krishna on this day. If you have no idea about pooja then I am giving you a little idea of the pooja. People perform elaborate poojas during the festival. They keep day long fast.

To pray to Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, the pooja is done to seek his blessings on the wonderful festival of Janmashtami. People organize pooja during the daytime but mostly the main pooja, including aarti, is conducted in the midnight of the festival. Where mantras of Lord Krishna are chanted, bhajans and songs are sung.

 Steps for the Sree krishna Pooja

  • Small image of Balkrishna
  • A small cradle decorated with flowers and a small potda (handkerchief is kept in the cradle)
  • New clothes for God’s idols
  • Panchamrut made out of unboiled milk, curds, ghee, honey and powdered sugar
  • Flowers and flower garlands, chandan, ittar
  • A book containing Shri Krishna's aarti.

krishna Pooja Process

Early in the morning, devotees give a bath to Lord Krishna, which is also termed as “abhishek”. The bathing ingredients comprise of the Gangajal, ghee, water, honey and curd.

Once Bal-Gopal (Shri Krishna) is given bath, devotees embellish and beautify the idol of Krishna with newly purchased jewellary, accessories and clothes. Many devotees spend days before the Janmashtami to purchase these clothes and ornaments for Krishna.

The idol of Krishna is then made to swing as a part of tradition.

Bhog (an offering to lord), comprising of fruits, kheer, pedha etc… are offered to Lord.

Along with all the above steps Krishna Aarti, mantras, bhajans are sung melodiously that fills the environment with positive vibrations.

Janmashtami Recipes:

Ashtami Rohini is a festival celebrated with lot of zeal and joy. It creates an overjoyed atmosphere all around. As you know Lord Krishna was very fond of milk and milk products, so devotees make various dishes of milk to please the Lord on this day.

Commonly the devotees make those food items which are most favorite of the Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is welcomed by offering umpteen varieties of delicious sweet dishes are prepared from milk and curds that Krishna loved.

Most families keep a fast on this day but I have also provided the fast recipes for you.
All these mouth-watering items are placed in front of Lord Krishna at midnight and this called as the ritual of ‘bhog’.
