The Eyjafjallajökull volcano lies underneath a glacier in southern Iceland near the larger volcano Katla. On April 14, 2010, its eruption (rated VEI 2 or 3) melted ice and blasted smoke and tiny particles of ash into the air, cancelling air travel all over Europe and flooding nearby areas. Here we offer photos of significant volcanoes from all over the world. Each interval represents an increase of a factor of 10; for example, a VEI of 4 is 10 times greater than a VEI of 3. |
