The Eyjafjallajökull volcano lies underneath a glacier in southern Iceland near the larger volcano Katla. On April 14, 2010, its eruption (rated VEI 2 or 3) melted ice and blasted smoke and tiny particles of ash into the air, cancelling air travel all over Europe and flooding nearby areas. Pictured: The volcano continues to erupt on April 19, 2010. -- Kelsey Ramos, Los Angeles Times *The Volcanic Explosivity Index, or VEI, is a scale from 0 to 8 (similar to the earthquake's Richter scale) that describes the size of an explosive volcanic eruption based on volume of ash produced, height of eruption cloud and the duration of eruption. Each interval represents an increase of a factor of 10; for example, a VEI of 4 is 10 times greater than a VEI of 3. |
