Centrelink was established by the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard, on 24 September 1997. The main aim of the organization is to rebuild of the Department of Social Security (DSS), the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA), Student Assistance Centres and the Commonwealth Employment Service (CES). Primarily services are also delivered by Centrelink on behalf of the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services & Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

The trading name of the Commonwealth Service Delivery Agency (CSDA) is Centrelink. On behalf of agencies of the Commonwealth Government of Australia, Centrelink is a statutory authority responsible for delivering human services. The disbursement of Social security payments are mostly made through Centrelink's services. All the payments are made under Social Securities Act and the Student Assistance Act. These payments include ABSTUDY, Age Pension, Assistance for Isolated Children, Austudy Payment, Carer Allowance, Carer Allowance (Child), Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Double Orphan Pension, Newstart Allowance, Maternity Payment, etc.

The official website of Centrelink is parted into various navigations i.e. online services, Forms, publications, careers@centrelink, Media, etc. ‘Online service’ navigation of Centrelink allows registered users make a claim for payment, apply for an Advance Payment, request a document, update/advise the details, report employment income, make a request a replacement card, to view/print the details, etc. besides this, it also provides information about Centrelink payments, youth allowance, retirement pensions & child care.

To use all the above services, Customer has to register by creating an account with Centrelink. For registration, go to the registration page then enter Centrelink Reference Number (CRN) and click on continue. After that, to verify the identity, members have to give some answer about them and their Centrelink record. Now, confirm the access level and select the password for online services. Member has to set their personal Identification Number (PIN) for phone services, if he/she wants. Now, select one question and answer your own which can help if you forget your password. After that, you will receive information about how to log on to use online services.

Registered member can add Nominee Access after login. To add nominee, first of all, select log on button and enter your Customer Access Number (CAN) and password. Now, select "Self Service Access" and "Nominee Access to Online Services Registration" from the menu. Lastly, logout and log in again to access Nominee Online Services.

The second navigation of Centrelink is ‘Forms’ where customers can get different types of Centrelink forms, Customer forms and Business forms. ‘Publications’ navigation consist a wide variety of publications about Centrelink payments and services available in both PDF and RTF formats. ‘Careers@Centrelink’ navigation offers details of Current vacancies, working at Centrelink and Centrelink programs.

‘Media’ navigation includes options like centrelink media release, dates for your diary, fact bank, Media contacts, photo library, etc. while ‘What's new’ navigation includes recent news of Centrelink. At the bottom of the homepage ‘Explore’ is given in which one can easily navigate the whole website. ‘Site A to Z’ option is also given on the top of the homepage which helps to access the website by selecting a letter for an alphabetical list of related topic. To find nearest location of Centrelink, just enter suburb, select type of office and click on ‘search’ option. ‘Find us’ option is available at the top of homepage.
