Leucoderma is a skin disorder, where the skin pigment melanin is lost in the skin layers. Leucoderma means white skin. Leucoderma is also known as vitiligo. The loss of skin color is gradual and finally results in white patches. This does not cause any harm to the individual and is not contagious also. These patches vary in size and can be unattractive if the individual is of dark complexion.The main causes of Leucoderma includes: hereditary factors, burn injuries, chronic gastric disorders, typhoid, mental stress and defective perspiratory disorders. The appearance of small white patches start initially which later spreads to a large extent. In extreme cases, most of the body parts become covered with these white patches. |
