Gudi Padwa marks the first day of Marathi Calendar and is celebrated primarily in the southern states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Gudi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month. Gudi Padwa is celebrated as the New Year day by Maharashtrians. In this year this day will celebrated on 27 March.
Gudi Padwa celebrate different state with different name. This festival is known as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Sindhis celebrate it as Cheti Chand. Ugadi and Gudi Padwa share the same legends and customs. The Prasad of neem leaves and jaggery is common to all the three.
Gudi Padwa is considered one of the four most promising days of the year when people start new ventures. It is believed that Lord Brahma created the world on this day, and he is worshiped specially at this time. It is also believed that on this day, King Vali was killed by Rama and Shri Rama returned to Ayodhya victorious.
Gudi Padwa is symbolic of love and devotion between the wife and husband. On this day newly-married daughters with their husbands are invited for special meals and given presents. People prepare for the New Year by cleaning and washing their houses and buying new clothes. On the festival day they decorate their houses with mango leaves and rangoli designs.
The Gudi is raised outside the main entrance to the house. The place is chosen to be on the right side of the entrance. The right side symbolizes active state of the soul. The Gudi is covered with a colorful silk cloth and decorated with marigold flowers, nuts, coconut and mango leaves. it is the symbol of nature's bounty. Gudi also appears that they are expected to sales of evil and invite prosperity and happiness in the house.
People perform the ritual worship of God Invoking his blessings before they start the new year. They pray for their health, wealth, prosperity and success in business also.
