Achilles tendonitis refers to the irritation or swelling or the inflammation of the Achilles tendon which is the tendon connecting the lower half of the calf muscle to the heels. Tendonitis generally is the permanent damage that occurs or affects the tendons and usually affects athletes. It starts as an indistinct discomfort which later leads to loss of flexibility and disfiguring of tissues. The causes of Achilles tendonitis are: over use or over straining of the Achilles tendon, poor flexibility, excessive uphill running or running on uneven or hard surfaces, wearing high heeled footwear or improper footwear and any trauma or accident to the tendon. The most common symptoms of Achilles tendonitis are: swelling of the tendon, severe pain in the heels or tendons while walking or running, redness of skin around the tendon, formation of bump over the tendon and weakness in the lower part of the leg. |
