People with liver disease may benefit from a small amount of dark chocolate each day, according to new research presented at the annual International Liver Congress in Vienna. Spanish scientists found that cirrhosis patients who ate dark chocolate may have less damage to the blood vessels and reduced blood pressure in the liver. A total of 21 patients with end-stage liver disease took part in the study, in which they each received a liquid meal. Ten of the patients were given a meal containing dark chocolate, while the others received food containing white chocolate. The latter contains no 'phytochemicals' - natural plant antioxidants. |
