When international Flight 627 arrives Boston's Logan Airport with no one left alive onboard, FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham's investigation takes her to seek the help of Walter Bishop, a genius scientist who's been institutionalized for 17 years. He won't speak to her, however, so she recruits his estranged son Peter to help. The three investigate mega-corporation Massive Dynamic and its Chief Operating Officer, Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) and discover that what happened on the flight is only a small piece of a larger plot.

Firstly because of the cinematic quality, but mostly by how brilliantly the story manipulated our tech-weary anxieties. When I first read the leaked script for Fringe months ago, I was immediately struck funny by the opening scene in which a German airliner lands itself. Was it a technical gaff of the show, or was I just a relic of en earlier technological epoch? As insignificant as that scene is, the effect of it at that moment lets the real genius of the show spill in; Fringe had discovered a unique mixture of science fiction staples – the unimaginable with the ‘not surprised it is possible’ – and chilled it to just the right temperature.
