Universal lands a Merman

Universal and Imagine Entertainment have hooked the rights to Merman, a romantic comedy script pitch written by Jennifer Abu Hollander.

It’s a return to his earlier days for Imagine’s Brian Grazer, who essentially launched his film-producing career (not to mention his association with Ron Howard) with 1984’s mermaid comedy Splash.

This sounds like an answer to that movie, with a Merman leaving the ocean in search of his mermaid fiancée, who ditches him for a human man. We hate it when that happens.

There’s no word on a director yet, but you can bet Grazer will be running it past Howard…
