Star Trek warps away at the US box office

Posted By totalfilm.com on May 10, 2009   FROM: rss.feedsportal.com report abuse

Star Trek was a clear success across the pond this weekend, opening to $76.5 million, including previews that began on Thursday night.

While its launch figure was smaller than that of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s still light years ahead of previous Trek outings and, thanks to healthy word of mouth, the pic should have a healthy run in cinemas.

And that sound you hear is the docking clamps being released from the sequel – surely Paramount will go ahead with development beyond the already commissioned script now.

Talking of Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s mutant prequel lost 68% to take in $27 million this weekend, for a running tally of $129.6 million.

Ghosts Of Girlfriends past fell to third, nabbing $10.4 million, while Obsessed nudged down to third, with $6.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was 17 Again, which added $4.4 million to its current $54 million total.

The only other wide opening was comedy Next Day Air, starring Scrubs’ Donald Faison. That slumped into sixth with $4 million.

Here, then, your top 10 for the weekend:

Star Trek ($76.5 million) X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($27 million) Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past ($10.4 million) Obsessed ($6.6 million) 17 Again ($4.4 million) Next Day Air ($4 million) The Soloist ($3.6 million) Monsters Vs Aliens ($3.3 million) Earth ($2.5 million) Hannah Montana: The Movie ($2.4 million)
