For a long time, it looked like DJ Caruso would recruit his old Disturbia/Eagle Eye mucker Shia LaBeouf for the lead in Y: The Last Man. Now? Not so much.
While both Caruso and LaBeouf have talked up the possibility in the past, the actor has now told Wizard magazine that he’s not considering the part right now, mostly due to playing Sam in Transformers.
How so? Well, Yorick Brown, the male lead – the only male, aside from his monkey, Ampersand – in Y is a wise-cracking bloke thrust into a tough world where every other man has died and he’s surrounded by women.
Switch “women” for “robots” and you have LaBeouf’s argument. “You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder, he says.
"I don't know if it's that big a differential. It seems like he's the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again.
"I'm not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around."
Hhhm… We’re not sure we see the dilemma as, while the characters have some similarities, the stories are vastly different. And Brian K Vaughn’s graphic novel tale, while tough to adapt for the screen, is superb.
Oh, well – either Caruso will talk LaBeouf round or it’ll give him the chance to find and launch some other young actor, or let some other established star have a crack at the role.
