Dwayne Johnson in 20,000 Leagues?

Dwayne Johnson has apparently been cast in McG’s update of the undersea Disney adventure classic 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Now, given his current star status – and the healthy relationship he has with the Mouse House after The Game Plan and Race To Witch Mountain – it’s likely he’s signing on to play Captain Nemo, but he doesn’t strike us as the perfect Nemo - or at least, he'd be a startling different one.

The plot, as dug out by Production Weekly, runs as follows: A fugitive whaler teams up with a naturalist, a mysterious woman and a captain of a futuristic submarine, to search for a lost underwater civilization that holds libraries of vast knowledge and a weapon with the power to destroy mankind. You know, that old story.

So could he play the “fugitive whaler”? Or is he Nemo for sure? Time to track down McG and ask.

Either way, Disney is crossing its fingers that the film can gear up for a shoot this year and make it into cinemas for 2010.
