The San Fransisco Giant’s Pitcher Jonathan Sanchez has pitched the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball Season! This is truly a time for celebration for any San Franciso Giants fans or Jonathan Sanchez fans, but it’s truly a great time to just be watching baseball all around.
Jonathan Sanchez was cheered on by his father Sirgfredo, who was admittedly very nervous for his son. Cameras watched as Sirgfredo struck out hitter after hitter. As Jonathan Sanchez continued to pitch with his father at his side, cheering him on the entire way, Jonathan Sanchez threw his third strike against Everth Cabrera to finish the no hitter and first complete game of his career.
Before Jonathan Sanchez, the last major league baseball player or “great” to throw a no hitter was Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. Righetti fired away a no hitter for the New York Yankees on the fourth of July in 1983. Breaking a 26 year record was no small achievement for Jonathan Sanchez, and he was congratulated after the game with all of his good friends and his nervous, now exhuberant father.
Sanchez’s father is only in town for a short period as he’s visiting fro Puerto Rico. In fact, he just arrived in San Fransisco on Thursday night. Jonathan Sanchez credited his no hitter win to his father, saying “This is a gift for him” and “I feel awesome.” The Padres, the defeated opponents on the other side of the no hitter from Jonathan Sanchez have been no hitted seven times since Bud Smith got them with 4-0 for St. Louis on September 3rd of 2001.
An even more startling statistic, this was the first no hitter for the Giants since Big Leaguer Carl Hubbel pitched a no hitter against Pittsburgh on May 8th, 1929. What’s better? Jonathan Sanchez was
a 27th round draft pick in 2004. This was truly a great moment in baseball history.
