The beloved chocolate egg is in danger because of controversial new plans by the European Union.

Just as tens of millions of Europeans are preparing to sink their teeth into the sweet, seasonal treats this weekend, the European Commission has unwrapped extraordinary proposals to swoop down on the Easter egg market. It says the move is driven by health and competition concerns. In particular, it says the growing obesity problem has its roots in the fast and sweet food culture, with Easter eggs a prime culprit.
“There has been a staggering rise in obesity in the EU and we see the very aggressive marketing campaigns for Easter eggs as part of the problem,” says the Commission’s Health Affairs spokesman
