Good Friday is also known as Holy Friday, Black Friday, or Great Friday. Good Friday is the day on which Catholics commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. Good Friday is a holiday observed primarily by Christians. This year Good Friday falls on 2nd April, 2010. On Good Friday, Jesus was arrested in a tease trial. To be beaten and flogged with whips, he was handed over to the Roman soldiers. A crown of long, sharp thorns was push upon his head. Jesus carries his cross outside the city to head Hill. After beating, he was so weak. So, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was pulled him from the crowd and forced to carry Jesus' cross to head Hill the rest of the way. There he was crucified along with two criminals; their crosses were on either side of him. Good Friday is a Christian holiday that takes place two days before Easter Sunday, which is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the March equinox. The date of Good Friday changes every year. However, it is a day of strict fasting and abstinence. The name of Good Friday may be derived from 'God's Friday' in the same way that good-bye is derived from 'God be with ye'. The barrier of offense was broken on this day so it is a ‘good’. From the early nineteenth century, working people had only two days of relaxation that were universally granted, Good Friday and Christmas Day, before the introduction of bank holidays. Today, Good Friday is a public holiday in much of the UK so many businesses are closed on that day. On Good Friday, Some Christians go on fast to remember the sacrifice of Jesus. Also, some Christians take part in a procession of spectator in which the cross is being carried through the streets and then into church. Many churches hold a special service on this day like communion service in the evening or a time of prayer during the day, especially around 3 o'clock when Jesus died. It is a day of sorrow so Churches are not decorated on Good Friday and in some churches, pictures and statues are covered over. On Good Friday, many Catholics eat fish instead of meat. In some areas, it is common to eat fish on this day. It is traditional to eat warm 'hot cross buns' on Good Friday. The top of the bun is marked with a cross which symbolizes and reminds Christians that Jesus was killed on. Traditionally, in the preparation for Easter Sunday, Good Friday was the day when everything was cleaned and whitewashed. |
