"Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" lives up to its title. During its brisk 90 minutes, a veritable basinful of the red stuff flows. The same goes for cranked-up silliness, which is the name of the game in this offbeat and spirited pop-rock musical about the controversial 19th century American president. It flaunts Old Hickory, as Jackson became known, in snug jeans, Adam Lambert eyeliner and an angsty emo-rocker attitude. The show, seen in a couple earlier versions at the Public Theater, is by writer-director Alex Timbers, head of the edgy downtown troupe Les Freres Corbusier, and composer-lyricist Michael Friedman, known for the musical "Saved" and collaborations with the group The Civilians. He has a flair for catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics that tap literature and pop culture in surprising ways. |
