The Rorschach test, a series of 10 inkblot plates created by the Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach for his book "Psychodiagnostik," published in 1921. This is a test that may no longer be prevalent - because the ink blot pictures and their "answers" have been posted online.

The Rorschach test, commonly known the psychological 'ink blot' test in which a patient is shown a series of cards stained with ink shapes, who are then asked to explain what they see. Five of the blots are black-and-white, two are black, white, and red, and the last three are in attractive colors. (It is attractive or not depends upon your view).

Some psychologists use this test to try to examine the personality characteristics and emotional functioning of their patients. It has been employed in diagnosing underlying thought disorder and differentiating psychotic from non psychotic thinking in cases where the patient is reluctant to admit openly to psychotic thinking.

In a national survey in the U.S., the Rorschach was ranked eighth among psychological tests used in outpatient mental health facilities. It is the second most widely used test by members of the Society for Personality Assessment, and it is requested in 25% of forensic assessment cases, usually in a battery of tests frequently also including the MMPI-2 and the MCMI-III. In surveys, 80% of clinical psychologists engaging in assessment services utilize the Rorschach, and 80% of psychology graduate programs teach it.

In the past days, the online encyclopedia Wikipedia has been overwhelmed in a livid debate involving psychologists who are angry that the 10 original Rorschach plates are reproduced online, along with common responses for each.

Psychiatrists blasted online, after the website posted the Rorschach test photos and consequent common answers, insisting the site has given patients a cheat sheet.
