More than 2,000 city eighth-graders got matched to high schools - even though they never applied to them. After watching most of their classmates win admission to high school in late March, these students applied a second time, only to end up with none of their selections. Among them is Yevgeniy Khalabudnyak, a 13-year-old Brooklyn honors student at Junior High School 234 who emigrated from Russia just three years ago. He got matched to Sheepshead Bay High School, which he didn't apply to and where just 53% of students graduate in four years. |
