Donald Westlake is the king of Comic caper novel And John Archibald Dortmunder his prize creation of knowledgeable professional thief who plans always, for some strange reason, go spectacularly and hilariously wrong. The thing that Dortmunder is a genius, a certifiable criminal mastermind. He is also the world's unluckiest Crook - how careful arrangements, how beautiful and intricately plotted and extended to (almost) last detail, something always goes wrong. No wonder Dorrtmunder, twice loser, is plagued by worries. And it does not help that his usual co-Hort his, uh, more than a little eccentric. And not the smartest Crayolas in the first novel in the series, The Hot Rock, began as another Parker novel, the idea of a thief to steal the same and over. Unfortunately, it was fun, not something you associate with Hard-boiled, grim, no-nonsense Parker novels, and if a star is born. Dortmunder and his crew have a long career in novels, short stories and films.The stories and books are great, but the quality of the films varied widely, from the excellent The Hot Rock (1972) to the truly appalling Jimmy Kid (1983), which was turned into a "star" vehicle for young actor Gary Coleman.

West Lake began his novel writing career in 1960 with an extremely difficult hard-boiled crime novels. In 1965 he published his first comic caper, and for many years general wrote his hard cooked books under pseudonyms hard (especially Richard Stark) and his comic novels under his real name.
Since around 1990, he wrote some very hard-boiled crime novels of psychological tension under his own name. Most of the books on this list, comedy, but that is Serio-comic Thrillers or specifically identified.
