Computer courses for biotech students:

Biotechnology is a science that involves manipulation of living organisms to get the desired results.

The techniques involved in the process have evolved parallel to and subjected by the development of other areas of science and technology.

From the traditional techniques like selective breeding, hybridisation biotechnology progressed to DNA techniques and tissue culture. Manipulation of living organisms involves compilation, storage, and analysis, processing maintenance of huge amount of data related to cells.

Thus the usage of computing techniques is inevitable. Huge databases and tools are developed for the purpose.

Bioinformatics:

More and more research is being done in this area of application of computers in biotechnology leading to development of a specialised area called bioinformatics.

If you are keen on this area, you can opt for a course in it. You can opt for master’s degree or Post Graduate diploma in bioinformatics depending on the requirements of the job.

These courses are offered by several universities in both regular and distance modes. If you wish to focus on a career in biotechnology and gain knowledge in computers as supplementary skills, you can opt for courses in office applications and database management offered by several institutes like NIIT or Aptech.

Databases

Also, there are some databases of genomic data and other tools for related activities built by research institutes for public use.

Some companies have their own software and databases to be used by their staff. You might have to learn and use any of these according to the demand.
