Shakira attacks Arizona immigration law

The Colombian-born singer and UNICEF ambassador said that the law is contrary to American ideals.

Shakira has attached the chorus of resistance to the new Arizona immigration law. President Obama has questioned the validity, the Linda Ronstadt invited to lift the Stars, the band called for a boycott, and now Grammy-winning Colombian singer has visited Phoenix to discuss contentious legislation with the city's mayor.
Civil rights activists are angry over the bill 1070, signed into law by Arizona Governor January Brewer said. If police suspect a significant person of being an illegal immigrant, the bill directs officers to ask about their status migration - and if they do not carry messages to commit a crime. Critics have called this state-sponsored racial profiling.

Mr Obama said the Arizona law emphasized the need for migration reform to be considered at the federal level.

Proponents of the law believe it is necessary to curb crime in the state, home to some 460,000 against the law immigrants, and is a major corridor for drug traffickers and migrant workers from Mexico.
