An American Airlines plane hit a patch of ice and slid off a runway at O'Hare International Airport Wednesday night. Airline announced 'engine problems' before flight. Passengers hospitalized as plane crash probed. The aircraft, an MD-80 was bound for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when it slid off Runway 22 Left, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Passengers de-boarded, and were taken to airport buses to be taken back to the terminal, according to Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. The 54 passengers would be put onto a later flight out of O’Hare. No exact plans for these passengers have been made. Two American Airlines jets were guided past each other at a fraction of the legal minimum distance of separation between them because of an error by an air traffic assistant. The Federal Aviation Administration has informed the safety board that a series of steps will be taken to remedy air traffic problems in the Chicago area.
