SW China Earth Quakes

More than 95,000 people were affected by two earthquakes in the Province of southwest China Friday. More than 1,700 people were affected and nearly 1,300 homes were damaged. Magnitude quake hit Yiliang county in Kunming, the provincial capital, at about 2:19 a.m. Friday. Another tremor measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale shook Yiliang county, damaging more than 100 houses in eight villages. Meanwhile a quake of magnitude 4.0 hit in neighboring Guizhou province on Friday, with no casualties reported, Xinhua said.

quake reportedly destroyed the city government's office building and prompted the evacuation of about 30,000 people. Another smaller quake was reported in Guizhou province. Local governments allocated 200,000 yuan for quake-relief. Governments were distributing tents, quilts, clothes and other supplies. The two quakes with magnitudes of 4.3 and 4.9, struck in the early hours of Friday in different parts of Yunnan. Nearly 10,000 people were evacuated and were unable to return to their homes on Saturday, according to Xinhua. Damage reports are pending.
