Sergeant Alvin Cullum York was a United States soldier, famous as a World War I hero.
Sergeant Alvin C. York was born on December 13, 1887, in Pall Mall, Tennessee. His life is turned toward the woman, Gracie Williams, who convinced him to give his worldly ways and go to church. Formed long held firm religious beliefs as a result. He was drafted in 1917. Impressed with the regular Army officers with his ability to use the weapons. Shot exactly in the range of 200, 300 and 500 meters. Struggled with the moral question of killing human beings, and refused to shoot in the human Silhouettes (goals). The battle in the Argonne Forest in the fall of 1918, as a member of the 82nd division, killed 25 Germans, 35 knocked out machine guns and captured 132 prisoners almost single-handed. Received the French Medaille militaire and the Croix de Guerra, the Italian Groce de Guerra and the American Medal of honor. Came home to the adulation of the American people, married Gracie Williams, and died in Nashville, Tenn. on the 2 September 1964 after a cerebral hemorrage. Read Details at wiki. Sgt. Alvin C.
